Global Experiences

Study Abroad

I studied abroad in Greece during May of 2023, immersing myself in a transformative experience that broadened my perspective on leadership, culture, and global issues. This opportunity allowed me to engage with Greece’s rich history and dynamic society while developing valuable skills through hands-on learning and exploration.

During my time abroad, I traveled across various regions of Greece, from the busy streets of Athens to the breathtaking landscapes of the islands. Being surrounded by ancient landmarks such as the Parthenon and the ruins of Delphi gave me a new appreciation for the historical foundations of democracy and leadership. Experiencing these sites firsthand, rather than simply reading about them, made history feel more relevant.

Being in Greece required a level of independence and adaptability that pushed me out of my comfort zone. Navigating a country where I did not speak the language was both challenging and rewarding, forcing me to become more resourceful in everyday situations. Whether it was figuring out public transportation, ordering food, or communicating with locals through gestures and basic Greek phrases, I quickly learned how to problem-solve and adjust to new environments.

One of the most impactful aspects of my study abroad experience was the people I met along the way. I formed friendships with fellow students as we explored a new country together. Additionally, engaging with locals and learning about their perspectives on history, politics, and daily life gave me a deeper understanding of Greek culture beyond what a tourist might experience.

Looking back, studying abroad in Greece was a life-changing experience that challenged me to grow in ways I never anticipated. It reinforced my passion for lifelong learning, my appreciation for cultural exchange, and my confidence in navigating unfamiliar situations. The memories, friendships, and lessons I gained from this adventure will stay with me forever, shaping how I approach the world.

International Coursework

While I was in Greece, I took two courses: Global Leadership and The Experience. These courses provided me with an academic and experiential foundation, allowing me to develop leadership competencies.

Global Leadership

The Global Leadership course was instrumental in shaping my understanding of what it means to lead in an increasingly interconnected world. Through a combination of case studies, group discussions, and real-world applications, I learned how effective leaders must think, act, and inspire in diverse cultural settings. A significant component of this course involved analyzing historical leadership models, particularly in the context of Greek history and its influence on modern governance with respect to democracy.

One of the most impactful lessons I took from this course was the importance of adaptability in leadership. Being in a foreign country challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and apply leadership principles in unfamiliar situations. Whether it was leading discussions during site visits or collaborating with peers on foreign concepts, I learned how to navigate cultural differences and think critically about the responsibilities of a leader in a globalized society.

The Experience

The Experience was unlike any class I had ever taken. Instead of a traditional classroom setting, learning took place through immersive experiences that allowed me to witness firsthand the economic, environmental, and social challenges associated with a foreign country. This course required me to engage with local communities, encouraging me to think critically about how population shifts impact economic stability, access to resources, and overall quality of life.

One of the most eye-opening aspects of the course was the focus on cultural and intercultural competence. I had the opportunity to interact with locals, hear their perspectives, and gain insights into the complexities of societal change. These interactions challenged me to examine my own assumptions and recognize the importance of community engagement in addressing global issues.

Campus Life Events

Participating in campus life events at the University of Florida has been an integral part of my global learning experience. One of the most impactful series of events I attended revolved around the Peace Corps, where I had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of international service, cultural exchange, and sustainable development. Although I do not plan to join the Peace Corps, learning about its mission, structure, and approach to global engagement broadened my perspective on international service.

These events provided an overview of what it means to serve in the Peace Corps, including the core principles of working alongside local communities rather than imposing outside solutions. A key takeaway was the emphasis on collaboration and sustainability so that projects are designed to be community-led, ensuring that initiatives continue long after volunteers complete their service. This perspective challenged common misconceptions about international aid and reinforced the importance of cultural humility in global engagement.

One of the most fascinating aspects I learned was how no two Peace Corps experiences are the same. Even volunteers placed in the same country can have vastly different assignments and community dynamics, leading to unique challenges and rewards. This reinforced the idea that global engagement is a deeply personal and evolving journey, shaped by cultural immersion, adaptability, and the relationships built along the way.

Attending these Peace Corps events expanded my understanding of international development and responsible global service. It made me reflect on the importance of cultural sensitivity, adaptability, and long-term sustainability in any form of global engagement. While I may not be pursuing the Peace Corps myself, the lessons I learned from these events will stay with me as I continue to seek meaningful ways to engage with global communities. Through these campus events, I was able to explore a new world of international involvement, reinforcing my passion for cross-cultural learning and ethical leadership in global contexts.
