Reflection

My time at the University of Florida, particularly through the International Scholars Program (ISP), has been transformative in shaping my understanding of global issues, cultural differences, and leadership in an interconnected world. Engaging in global coursework, campus events, and most significantly, studying abroad in Greece, expanded my perspectives and encouraged me to think critically about global views. While I have always been curious about different cultures, these experiences gave me tangible opportunities to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, navigate unfamiliar environments, and develop essential life skills such as independence, adaptability, and cross-cultural communication.

New Perspective

Before engaging in the ISP and studying abroad, my exposure to cultural diversity was relatively limited. Growing up in a small town on the border of suburban Chicago and rural Illinois, I didn’t have many opportunities to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds outside of my soccer team. My experiences at UF, however, exposed me to a much broader range of perspectives, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Studying abroad in Greece was the most immersive and eye-opening experience of them all. Although it lasted only two weeks, it had a profound impact on my worldview and something I am forever grateful to have been a part of. This program was not just about taking courses abroad, but a leadership development experience that focused on the historical and philosophical roots of democracy and global leadership. Walking through ancient historical sites, discussing leadership theory in the context of Greek philosophers, and engaging in conversations with peers allowed me to reflect deeply on what leadership means in a global context.

Challenges and Growth

While studying abroad was an incredible experience, it wasn’t without its challenges. Traveling in an unfamiliar country required me to be independent in ways I had never experienced before. From figuring out transportation and navigation to adapting to a new educational structure, I had to rely on problem-solving skills and remain open-minded in the face of uncertainty.

One of the biggest challenges was communication. While most people spoke English, there were still moments where language barriers made interactions difficult, especially when trying to understand local customs or navigate public transportation. I quickly learned that effective communication doesn’t always require words, it involves patience, creativity, and a willingness to adapt. This was a lesson I took with me when engaging in diverse environments back at UF, whether in class discussions, campus events, or professional settings.

Additionally, the experience strengthened my organizational skills. Managing logistics like daily schedules and budgeting my expenses forced me to be detail-oriented and proactive. These skills are directly transferable to both my academic and professional aspirations, especially as I prepare for law school and a career in transactional law.

Bridging Global Learning to My Future

Reflecting on my global learning experiences at UF, I can confidently say that they have shaped me in ways I never anticipated. The combination of international coursework, study abroad, and campus events has deepened my understanding of global interconnectedness and has equipped me with the skills needed to navigate an increasingly globalized world.

As I move forward in my career, I plan to integrate this global perspective into my work in law. Transactional law often involves dealing with international contracts, negotiations, and cross-border regulations. The ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, understand cultural differences, and approach challenges with a globally conscious mindset will be invaluable. Additionally, the leadership skills I developed, both in the classroom and through real-world experiences, will help me collaborate in future situations.

Beyond my professional aspirations, my global experiences have also influenced me on a personal level. I now have a deep appreciation for cultural exchange and a desire to continue learning from people with different perspectives. Whether through future travel, professional opportunities, or continued engagement in global issues, I am committed to remaining globally aware and engaged.

Final Reflections

Looking back, my time at UF and my participation in ISP were more than just academic achievements, they were catalysts for personal growth, cultural awareness, and professional development. The challenges I faced and the lessons I learned have made me more confident, adaptable, and ready to tackle the complexities of an interconnected world. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have had and excited to see how these experiences will continue to shape my future.
